synopsis

This course focuses on teaching the facilitation skills necessary to elicit and analyze requirements on a project. Effective facilitation is a critical competency of the business analyst for working with stakeholders to produce, document, analyze, validate and achieve consensus on requirements. In this highly interactive course, you will learn how to effectively help stakeholders define their needs and form these into quantifiable requirements through facilitation. As a facilitator, you will learn to prepare for and conduct both face-to-face and virtual facilitation sessions. You will be practicing several facilitation techniques, applying several effective facilitation practices, and learning how to manage conflict and group dynamics in a session. Most importantly, you will have the opportunity to practice these skills in a safe environment. This course It represents materials and ideas that have been tested and refined over 20 years of active facilitation in all types of settings. This course is aligned with the latest version of A Guide to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge® (BABOK® Guide)™.

  • MODULE 2: FACILITATOR'S TOOLKIT

    At the end of this module, you should be able to:

    1. Prepare a workshop agenda.
    2. Define a parking lot or an issue bin.
    3. Discuss how to use a parking lot.
    4. Discuss actions at the end of the session to deal with items in the parking lot.
    5. Establish ground rules for the session.
    6. Establish your authority to facilitate the session. 
  • MODULE 3: PLANNING AND LEADING THE WORKSHOP

    At the end of this module,  you should be able to:

    1. Determine environmental considerations for the facilitated session.
    2. Identify session participants and their interests and expectations. 
    3. Determine and prepare for potential risks associated with the session.
    4. Apply various structured approaches to brainstorming such as root cause analysis, SWOT analysis, force field analysis, etc.
    5. Become more aware of your non-verbal communication.
    6. Use paraphrasing to achieve a shared understanding of requirements.
    7. Recognize and deal with the time challenges facing team members.
    8. Apply a structured approach to tasks' analysis.
    9. Use business analysis artifacts to help guide the process
    10. Ensure the participation of all, and handle the "dominator." 
  • MODULE 4: FACILITATION CONFLICT TECHNIQUES

    At the end of this module, you should be able to:

    1. Distinguish the difference between an argument and a debate.
    2. Determine if intervention is necessary.
    3. Handle and resolve a conflict between participants and with a participant.
    4. Apply a variety of voting techniques to achieve consensus.
    5. Apply prioritization techniques.
