Corporate training is experiencing a significant challenge. Learners are swamped, sidetracked, and anxious. Generally, they may only have 1% of their workweek available for learning or career development. When you have limited time, you need to make choices. Behavioral economics calls it the "tyranny of choice." People struggle as they try to do their jobs and manage their career development. Thus, we need a new approach to learning. The new method uses a cross-functional design team to create tiny bits of learning available on-demand from any device at any time. Microsoft uses the term "learning snacks." "I'm hungry for information – so I get a learning snack."
Learning snacks are more engaging because learners get only the information they crave. A learning snack addresses just one concept, topic, or tool. With learning snacks, learners retain more. It is more likely that the learners will immediately apply what they have learned. That increases retention. Besides, learning snacks prevent overloading learners with content that is not relevant to them personally.
